In 2011, the Environmental Agency of Great Britain published a
groundbreaking report* comparing all types of supermarket carry bags,
looking at raw materials used, production, distribution, use and reuse.

Surprisingly, this unbiased report found the humble plastic
grocery bag, when reused as a trash bin liner, to be the greenest of all.

	Paper bags would need to be reused at least 7 times, and cotton bags at least 327 times, to match the low environmental impact of plastic grocery bags that get reused as bin liners. People seldom reuse paper bags, and in the UK cotton bags are only reused an average 51 times.
	Recycling of paper or other kinds of bags does not have a significant effect on reducing their environmental impact.
	Reuse of plastic grocery bags as trash bin liners produces greater environmental benefits than recycling them.
	Plus, reusable bags need to be washed often to reduce bacterial contamination, using up additional water, detergents and energy.
